Frequently Asked Questions on Contact Dermatitis Treatment

Contact dermatitis is a type of skin reaction that occurs as a result of the skin coming into contact with certain substances or agents. It usually manifests as skin irritation or an allergic reaction. Contact dermatitis is divided into two main types: Allergic Contact Dermatitis and Irritant Contact Dermatitis. Allergic Contact Dermatitis occurs when the skin develops an allergic reaction to a specific substance. It typically presents with symptoms such as redness, itching, blisters, and sometimes a burning sensation on the skin. Irritant Contact Dermatitis, on the other hand, results from direct contact of the skin with irritating substances and is caused by direct damage to the skin, rather than an allergic mechanism.

Symptoms of contact allergy generally appear near the area where you touched the allergen. Redness and inflammation in the affected skin area are common. In most cases, severe itching occurs on the skin. Especially in allergic contact dermatitis, blisters or vesicles filled with fluid can form. A burning or stinging sensation may occur in the affected area. As the skin reaction begins to heal, peeling or crusting may be observed. In cases of severe allergic reactions, swelling can occur in the affected area.

Symptoms of contact dermatitis usually remain limited to the area of the skin that came in contact with the substance and gradually heal once the substance is removed from the skin. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, it is important to consult a dermatology specialist. The doctor will make the correct diagnosis to establish an effective treatment plan. Additionally, identifying and avoiding the triggering substance is important to prevent similar reactions in the future.

The diagnosis of contact dermatitis is usually based on a clinical examination and the patient's medical history. A dermatologist or health professional can diagnose by examining the changes in the skin and gathering information about the substances the patient has been exposed to. Additionally, some tests can be conducted to confirm the diagnosis and identify the triggering allergen:

A Patch Test is performed. This test is used to identify common allergens that can cause allergic contact dermatitis. During the test, various allergens are applied to the skin in small patches, and skin reactions are observed over several days. If an allergic reaction occurs on the skin, this indicates sensitivity to that allergen.

The doctor can obtain detailed information about the substances the patient has been exposed to, their current health condition, and their work and lifestyle habits. This information helps identify potential allergens. The diagnostic process can be time-consuming and complex in cases where multiple allergens may play a role. Once diagnosed, the doctor will inform the patient about ways to avoid exposure to the allergen and necessary treatment options. When allergic contact dermatitis is diagnosed, the most effective treatment usually involves completely avoiding exposure to the allergen and applying treatments that help heal the skin.

Depending on the severity of your symptoms, you can treat your contact dermatitis at home. The most important step in treating contact dermatitis is to avoid substances that cause irritation or allergic reactions. This helps reduce skin irritation and initiates the healing process. Your doctor may prescribe steroid creams or ointments. Applied to the skin, these treatments can help alleviate redness. Your doctor can tell you how often and for how long to use these medications.

Oral antihistamines can be used to reduce itching. Applying a cold compress to the affected area can alleviate swelling and itching. In severe cases of contact dermatitis, short-term oral corticosteroid treatment may be necessary. Using protective clothing or gloves against the triggering substance can help prevent future reactions.

After being diagnosed with contact dermatitis, we recommend consulting with a dermatologist or health professional to determine the best treatment method. Additionally, lifestyle changes and preventive measures are necessary to support the skin's healing process and prevent similar reactions in the future.

There are various risk factors that can play a role in the development of contact dermatitis. These risk factors can increase an individual's likelihood of developing contact dermatitis. Chemicals such as cleaning products, paints, solvents can cause contact dermatitis when they come into contact with the skin.

Individuals working in certain professions like hairdressers, healthcare workers, cleaning staff, painters are at higher risk due to frequent exposure to chemicals. People with dry or sensitive skin are more prone to contact dermatitis. Some studies suggest that women may be more prone to certain types of contact dermatitis than men. Individuals with allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis, asthma, or eczema have a higher risk of contact dermatitis. These factors can vary from person to person, and some individuals may be exposed to multiple factors.

Contact dermatitis, a condition that causes skin irritation and discomfort, can also lead to some complications. Wounds or cracks formed on the skin can

increase the risk of bacterial infection. Particularly, wounds opened as a result of scratching can easily become infected. Prolonged or severe contact dermatitis can cause changes in skin color (hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation). In chronic cases of contact dermatitis, the skin becomes continuously irritated and can form weeping, moist sores.

Continuous scratching and rubbing can lead to thickening and hardening of the skin. Constant exposure to certain allergens can lead to the chronicization of allergic reactions on the skin. Persistent skin discomfort and changes in appearance can negatively affect a person's self-esteem and quality of life. In some individuals, allergens that come into contact with the skin can trigger respiratory allergies. These complications can vary depending on the severity of the contact dermatitis and the individual's overall health condition. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment play a crucial role in preventing these complications.
